The 2nd annual Viva La Vida is less than a week away. While we count down the days, we’d like to spotlight our generous sponsors. As a grassroots team of locals, most of whom were born and raised in Santa Ana, we’re proud to collaborate with businesses that love this city as much as we do. Working on Viva La Vida is a labor of love for each of us and we’re happy to be supported not only by businesses that we frequent, but also the individuals behind those businesses.
We begin our sponsor spotlights with González Northgate Markets. The first Northgate Market opened on Anaheim Blvd in 1980 by the González Reynoso family of 15 who came to Southern California from Jalostotitlán, Jalisco. In the past 36 years, the legacy of familial patriarch, Miguel González Sr, continues with 42 stores across 3 SoCal counties. Santa Ana is home to 6 Northgate Markets, more than any other city.
While their expansion is vast, Northgate Markets remains a family owned and operated business committed to the prosperity of local communities. Through their award winning health and wellness program, Viva La Salud, customers of all ages can learn healthy habits while cooking traditional favorites. In 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama honored the mission of Northgate Markets, the first loan recipient of the Fresh Works Fund, for providing fresh produce at reasonable prices to underserved communities.
Northgate Markets’ involvement in community enrichment reaches beyond what’s expected of a local grocery store. The González Reynoso Family Foundation, established in 2000, has created a positive impact in Socal and in the family’s beloved Mexico. Through their charitable fundraisers like Northgate’s Annual Golf Tournament and partnerships with other charitable organizations like Teleton Mexamerica, the González Reynoso Family Foundation is able to donate to schools and sports teams here at home and support various orphanages and convalescent homes in Mexico.
The company’s headquarters remains in Anaheim, the same city where the first Northgate Market opened and still operates. The grocery store chain remains a family business in every sense of the word with many of Miguel González Sr’s children and grandchildren working at headquarters and the 42 store locations each day. The family members themselves participate in the company’s charitable events like the Northgate 5k in Anaheim and the annual toy giveaway outside Northgate stores during the holidays.
González Northgate Markets’ commitment to passing down the beauty of tradition, and giving back to and improving the lives in our community is why we’re proud they are a sponsor of Viva La Vida 2016.
